CEI provided construction administration and inspection services for this roadway widening project, which is one of nine projects that make up the Houghton Road Corridor. The corridor is located on the southeast side of Tucson and spans 13 miles from Interstate 10 to Tanque Verde Road. It is one of the projects included in the 2006 voter-approved, $2.1 billion Regional Transportation Authority plan. The existing bridge that was constructed in 1962 will be replaced with two new bridges and expand the capacity of the overall Houghton Road Corridor.

The Houghton Road widening at the Union Pacific Railroad project was constructed in two phases. Phase 1 construction began in March 2017 and kept traffic on the existing bridge while a new northbound three-lane bridge was constructed next to the existing bridge.

Phase 2 construction involved demolition of the existing bridge and construction of a new southbound three-lane bridge where the old bridge was located. The new three-span bridges will accommodate the two existing tracks and two additional future tracks. The project also includes a multi-use path on the east side of the bridge, which is conceptually part of the focus of the overall corridor development corridor development.
